Volunteers Week 2021 – Concetta

Triage volunteer Concetta has been working with HMSC since we opened our remote drop-in in March 2021. Here she gives an insight into the impact of her work at HMSC so far:

I decided to volunteer at HMSC because I’ve become more and more troubled by the demonisation of migrants in the UK, as demonstrated by the Home Office hostile environment policy, the Brexit vote and the Windrush scandal.

Like so many Londoners, my parents are migrants, so I have some understanding of what it means to leave your home and how hard it can be to make a new life elsewhere. But many of the people I’ve met through HMSC have been through experiences and trauma I can’t even begin to imagine. These are some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

If I can make a small contribution to helping them – whether it’s by providing information or a foodbank voucher, or just by being willing to listen and not judge, I can’t think of a better thing to do.

To anyone considering volunteering, I would say: do it. You will never regret time spent meeting and helping others.

Volunteers’ Week (1st – 7th June 2021) is an opportunity to celebrate, recognise and say thank you for the fantastic contribution volunteers make around the UK. Each day this week, we’ll be bringing you stories from HMSC’s incredible volunteers. To find out more about our work, follow us on Twitter.
