Volunteers Week 2021 – Catherine

First up, we hear from Catherine, who has been doing a fantastic job as a triage volunteer at HMSC since we started operating our remote advice-line, in March 2021. Below she explains how rewarding the experience has been:

“I am currently studying law at university and have developed a particular interest in human rights. I thought it would be incredibly rewarding to apply some of what I have learned to help people in real life. I have now realised that learning “in theory” is nothing compared to the complexities of real people’s lives, but my goodness is it rewarding!

As a triage volunteer, I am the second point of contact for our visitors. This is the point where they can really open up about what problems they are facing, and we can try and capture as much detail as possible. It is so rewarding to not only know that we have helped the visitor to take the first steps to improve their situation, but the best part is how grateful they are to just be able to talk freely to an open and friendly ear.

To anyone who is considering becoming a volunteer, I would say go for it! Your time and effort are so appreciated and you will learn so much.”

Volunteers’ Week (1st – 7th June 2021) is an opportunity to celebrate, recognise and say thank you for the fantastic contribution volunteers make around the UK. Each day this week, we’ll be bringing you stories from HMSC’s incredible volunteers. To find out more about our work, follow us on Twitter.
